Understanding Colored DiamondS

Colored diamonds are formed in the same way as traditional diamonds, but they contain trace elements or defects that alter their color.

The pink color in pink diamonds is due to Manganese inclusions within the diamond.

This is similar to what causes the color in red diamonds.

The blue color in blue diamonds is cause by trace amounts of Boron in the stones while Natural fancy Green diamonds are completely natural and caused by exposure to atomic radiation.

The intense Yellow color is caused by the presence of Nitrogen which can give yellow or orangish shades to a diamond

The irradiated ones on the other hand go through quite a process.
Irradiated diamonds can be natural ones which have a tinge of color that is made richer e.g. a cape diamond that is turned in to a canary yellow diamond or they can be synthetic ones.

The two most common irradiation methods are Neutron and Electron bombardment.

High-energy particles physically alter the diamond’s crystal structure, knocking carbon atoms out of place and producing color centers.

Neutron bombardment produces a greenish to black color which penetrates the whole stone.

Electron bombardment produces a green, blue green to blue color that forms a 1 mm skin around the stone.

All the above produce stones that make great colored rings.

Annealing which is a heat treatment that causes changes in its properties such as strength and hardness is then carried out at 500-900 C for Neutron-bombarded stones.

For Electron-bombarded stones its 500-1200 C.

This process produces orange, yellow, brown, or pink diamonds.

For many years, natural colored diamonds were the preserve of the super rich.

They have long been used as a form of investment considering the price of the top quality stones.

However, thanks to the likes of the Argyle mines, there are more colored diamonds in the market.

This has led to more colored diamond rings & colored diamond engagement rings.

So whether be it for diamond engagement rings or gold rings you have a choice of natural and irradiated diamonds to chose from; call it the best of both worlds.
