1 Carat Diamond – The Magic Number In Rings

The special 1 carat diamond

When it comes to diamonds, the 1 carat diamond holds a special place in people’s hearts.

I think this is because “1” feels and sounds more complete than 0.7 or 0.9 whatever the reason, it is a much sought after stone and thus attracts a higher price than a 0.9 carat diamond.

I know this sounds strange but there could be a price difference of $1,000 between a 0.9 carat diamond and a 1 carat diamond.Square shaped 1 carat diamond ring

Don’t be so shocked! I can explain the reason behind this.
During the diamond mining process, the general production size will be small diamonds i.e. 1.5 carat diamonds and below.

Mind you these are rough diamonds which are yet to be cut and polished.

In order to get a 1 carat round cut diamond, you will need at least a 3 carat rough diamond.

If you want a white 1 carat stone, then the rough diamond also needs to be at least 3 carats and clean.

Both rough and cut diamonds are bought and sold in carats. Keep this in mind as I explain further.

Diamonds are hard and can only be cut by other diamonds. This fact produces a lot of waste with round diamond shapes loosing 50% of their weight during the cutting process.

So if we take our 3.4 carat rough diamond and have it cut, we lose half its weight giving us 1.7 carats.

This lost weight is money down the drain if it is not factored in to the selling price of the diamond.

The best proportions in which to further cut this diamond in order to get a round cut diamond is 60: 40.

This will give us a 1.02 carat diamond and a 0.68 carat diamond which after polishing will give us a 1 carat cut & polished diamond and possibly a 0.65 carat cut and polished diamond.

Now you know why a 1 carat diamond is pricey. Even if the other 3Cs; the color, clarity and cut are lower, the price will be higher than that of a smaller diamond.

A 1 carat stone should be set in either gold, platinum or titanium unless its quality is very low meaning its color is visibly off white to yellowish and it has visible inclusions or dark marks inside it.
